Privacy Impact Assessments:

In 2002, the Government of Canada introduced the Policy on Privacy Impact Assessments requiring all government agencies to conduct Privacy Impact Assessments (PIA's) for any new or significantly altered collections, uses or disclosures of personal information. This sweeping and comprehensive policy brings a systematic approach to ensuring that government personal information management complies with the Privacy Act. Privacy Impact Assessments are not new, but the policy now requires government to conduct them. PIA's are invaluable for both private sector and public sector organizations to systematically analyze the program or service being contemplated.
